Decorating your home is both rewarding and invigorating. It feels so great when you turn around and see how much your house has improved after a little bit of DIY work here and there. With that being said, if you’re new to DIY home decor, then it’s easy to make a few common mistakes. Here are some of the big ones you really can't afford to make:
I think the biggest mistake people make is that they look for too many temporary fixes. This can apply to so many different things, but the concept is that you just take the easy way out. For example, let's say you’re trying to hang something on a wall. Instead of banging a nail into the wall for a more secure fixture, you might use something less invasive and quicker, which won’t last as long. So, after time, the thing will just fall off the wall. The same goes for any other thing you can think of when decorating; don’t be afraid to make the extra effort to come up with better solutions.
No matter what you’re painting, whether it’s a wall or a ceiling, you need to ensure you get a nice even coating all the way through. Otherwise, you end up with paint smears where the colour looks more dramatic than it does in other areas. A lot of professional painters work around this by using rollers that get the perfect coating on every application. Take a leaf out of their book and use these instead of brushes. For me, brushes should only come into play when painting a few more delicate details and patterns.
Spending too much
The joy of DIY is that you can save a lot of money. Or, let me rephrase that; you should save a lot of money! A common mistake is to spend way too much money when decorating your home by yourself. You buy expensive tools and products that end up making it far costlier than if you just got the pros in to do it for you. There’s no point in spending all this cash; work on finding cheap ways to decorate your home, which is the real purpose of DIY!
Following too many trends
Never be a sucker for home decor trends! Especially when you’re the one doing all the decorating in your home. The problem with trends is that they come and go. So, you could spend weeks designing your house based on the current trends, and then they go out of fashion within a couple of months. All that time, money, and effort, was for nothing! Instead, focus on ideas that will stand the test of time and won’t have to be re-done entirely later in the year.
Don’t make any of these four DIY home decor mistakes. Why? Because it will just result in more setbacks, which means too much of your time and money is spend decorating your home. The good thing is, you now know what to avoid, which makes it much easier to dodge these errors.
